Approach
Narrow first, and built to hand over
We start by watching the work. The spreadsheet everyone complains about is usually close to right: it encodes years of decisions about how the business runs. Replacing it without reading it first is the fastest way to build the wrong system.
What gets built is deliberately narrow: one process, done properly, in front of the people who do it, before anything else is added. A tool that covers a quarter of the work and gets used every day beats one that covers all of it and gets worked around.
It's built to be handed over. The code, the accounts, and the hosting are yours from the start, and you can take them to somebody else without asking us for anything.

The contact form at the bottom of this page posts to Crunchforms, which is ours. So is Qrosshatch, which has to keep resolving codes that were printed onto objects years ago and can't be recalled, and CrunchTrivia, which holds a room full of phones in step with a projector in real time. All three are live, and every support call about them comes to us.
Running your own product teaches something project work doesn't: everything you build, you eventually have to answer the phone about. It's why sign-in on our software isn't a password field and a hope — we wrote our own passkey and two-factor library, and the database rules that enforce it ship and get tested alongside the code.
